Gaza: The “Israeli” military confirmed Monday it killed prominent Gazan journalist Anas Al-Sharif, claiming he “posed as a journalist for Al Jazeera who served as the head of a terrorist cell” in Hamas.

Anas Al-Sharif, a prominent Gaza-based journalist, reported extensively from northern Gaza for Al Jazeera Arabic. A graduate of the Faculty of Media at Al-Aqsa University, he was awarded Palestine’s Best Young Journalist Award in 2018.

In July, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee accused Al-Sharif of being a member of Hamas’s armed wing, a claim Al Jazeera Media Network strongly rejected, calling it a “campaign of incitement” against its journalists.

“The network strongly condemns and denounces these relentless efforts, which have consistently incited against its staff since the beginning of its coverage of the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza. The Network considers this incitement a dangerous attempt to justify the targeting of its journalists in the field,” Al Jazeera said.

The statement by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) further claims Al-Sharif was “responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops.”

“Anas Al Sharif served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organization and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops,” the military said.

The strike occurred outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood, where several journalists had set up a tent near the hospital entrance.
