Who is Shabana Mahmood? Pakistani origin, UK’s first Women

London: Shabana Mahmood has been named the new Home Secretary of the United Kingdom following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s latest cabinet reshuffle. She succeeds Angela Rayner, who resigned from the position earlier this week.

With this appointment, Mahmood becomes the first Muslim woman to hold one of the most powerful offices in the UK government. The Home Office oversees immigration, policing, and national security—areas that are expected to be a central focus for the Labour government.

Who is Shabana Mahmood?

Born in Birmingham in 1980 to Pakistani parents, Mahmood spent part of her childhood in Saudi Arabia before returning to the UK. She studied law at Lincoln College, Oxford, and later qualified as a barrister, specialising in professional indemnity cases.

Her political journey began in 2010 when she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood, becoming one of the country’s first female Muslim MPs.

Although she stepped back from the Labour frontbench during Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, she returned under Keir Starmer and steadily rose through the ranks.

In 2023, she was appointed shadow justice secretary and, after Labour’s election win in 2024, became Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor. In that role, she introduced early release schemes to reduce prison overcrowding.

According to Sky News, Mahmood has voiced support for stronger deportation measures and has consistently raised concerns about child exploitation. As Home Secretary, she will face pressing issues, including clearing asylum backlogs, managing deportation cases, addressing grooming gang inquiries, and driving urgent police reforms.
