Medina, Saudi Arabia : Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Commission has announced the discovery of a rare rock inscription bearing the name of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, one of the most influential figures in Islamic history.

The finding was made during archaeological surveys in the Medina region and is being hailed as an important addition to the Kingdom’s growing record of early Islamic heritage.

The discovery was revealed as part of a large-scale archaeological survey conducted in Al Mahd Governorate, where researchers documented a remarkable collection of historical artifacts and inscriptions across the region.

According to the Heritage Commission, the inscription mentioning Umar ibn al-Khattab was among 1,774 archaeological findings uncovered during the first two survey seasons.

Officials described the discovery as evidence of the area’s rich historical significance and its connection to the early Islamic era.

Survey teams also documented 173 previously unknown archaeological sites, highlighting what the commission called the region’s “rich and diverse historical heritage.”

Among the most notable discoveries were 173 rock carvings bearing the name of Umar ibn al-Khattab, along with ancient Arabic poetry engraved on rocks, offering valuable insights into the cultural and religious history of the Arabian Peninsula.

The commission’s data showed that the findings include:

  • 1,259 rock art drawings
  • 461 Islamic inscriptions
  • 34 Thamudic inscriptions
  • 11 stone structures
  • Three palaces and archaeological structures
  • Two caravan route milestones
  • Four ancient wells

Archaeologists believe these discoveries will help researchers better understand the social, cultural, and religious developments that shaped the Arabian Peninsula during different historical periods.

Umar ibn al-Khattab was a close companion of Prophet Muhammad and served as the second Caliph of the Islamic state from 634 to 644 CE. He is widely recognized for his leadership, administrative reforms, and role in the early expansion of the Muslim world.

The newly discovered inscription is expected to provide historians with additional evidence of the historical presence and influence of early Islamic figures in the region.

Experts say such archaeological finds continue to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s efforts to preserve and document its rich Islamic and pre-Islamic heritage.

The Heritage Commission stated that ongoing surveys and research projects will continue across the Kingdom as part of broader efforts to uncover, protect, and study important historical sites for future generations.
