# ‘Every FIR a medal on my chest’: Rahul Gandhi during protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Around 300 opposition MPs gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday as the INDIA bloc intensified its protest against Chief Election Commissioner [Gyanesh Kumar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyanesh_Kumar), demanding his resignation over concerns surrounding the Election Commission’s revision of electoral rolls.

The protest came a day after opposition MPs were stopped from marching to the Election Commission’s office and staged an hours-long sit-in at Akashvani Bhavan.

Several opposition leaders, including [Rahul Gandhi ](https://alitoday.com/tag/rahul-gandhi/)and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained during Tuesday’s protest and later released.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Wednesday’s protest, Rahul Gandhi said:

“Like I said yesterday, 300 MPs wanted to meet the Election Commissioners but we were not allowed to. So today our plan is to protest at Jantar Mantar.”

Rahul Gandhi also targeted CEC Gyanesh Kumar, saying:

“We want to tell India ‘Gyanesh Kumar is not a legitimate CEC’. These people are traitors. He must resign.”

On the FIR registered in connection with Tuesday’s protest, Gandhi said:

“My aim is for 100.”

“So every FIR is a medal for me.” He added

Gandhi further alleged that the Election Commission’s actions were backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying:

“Whatever the Election Commission is doing, Narendra Modi is behind it. That means Modi himself is trying to destroy democracy.”

These allegations have been rejected by the BJP and the government, while the Election Commission has defended its decisions and said differences of opinion are part of institutional deliberations.

The Opposition has been demanding changes to the electoral-roll revision process and has accused the Election Commission of irregularities, while the poll panel has maintained its position on the process.
