NEW YORK : A viral video showing a man in the United States (US) confronting an Indian couple and telling them to “go back” to India has triggered widespread outrage on social media, reigniting discussions around racism and discrimination faced by immigrants in America.
The clip, shared on X by a user identified as “AyTone4th,” quickly spread online after the user captioned it: “I encountered some incredible H-1B Indians, and I had to let them know something!”
In the video, the man approaches the Indian couple and asks if they are from India. After they confirm, he asks, “Do you like America? Which country is better — America or India?”
The Indian man responds calmly, saying both countries have positives and that India offers the warmth of family while every place has its own value.
The conversation later turns hostile as the American man says, “India is so incredible, why don’t you just stay in India? Why do you have to come to America?”
When the couple replies that they wanted “to explore the world,” the man responds aggressively, saying, “No, we don’t want you here. You got to go home. Okay? Get out of my country.”
The incident surfaced just days after Marco Rubio strongly condemned racist remarks targeting Indian Americans during his recent visit to India.
“I’ll take that very seriously about the comments. I’m sure there are people who have made comments online and in other places because every country in the world has stupid people.” Rubio said,
“There are stupid people in the United States who make dumb comments all the time. The United States is a very welcoming country. Our nation has been enriched by people who come to our country from all over the world,” he added.
Indian Americans today form one of the most influential immigrant communities in the United States, with nearly 5.5 million people of Indian origin living across the country. The community has a strong presence in technology, healthcare, finance, education, and entrepreneurship.
Several Indian-origin leaders currently head major global companies, including Sundar Pichai at Google, Satya Nadella at Microsoft, Neal Mohan at YouTube, and Arvind Krishna at IBM.
The viral video has sparked mixed reactions online, with many users condemning the man’s remarks as racist and praising the Indian couple for remaining calm throughout the confrontation.
