San Francisco : A new cybersecurity concern has emerged after reports claimed that hackers used Meta own AI-powered support system to gain unauthorized access to several high-profile Instagram accounts.
According to reports, attackers allegedly manipulated Meta’s AI Support Assistant by providing misleading information and exploiting weaknesses in the automated support process.
The tactic reportedly allowed them to bypass normal account recovery procedures and take control of targeted Instagram profiles.
Cybersecurity researchers say the incident highlights growing risks associated with AI-driven customer support systems, which are increasingly being used by major technology companies to handle user requests and account-related issues.
The hackers are believed to have convinced the Meta AI assistant to grant access to accounts by exploiting verification gaps and automated decision making processes.
Several affected accounts reportedly belonged to prominent creators and public figures.
The incident has sparked fresh debate about the security of AI-powered support tools and whether critical account recovery functions should rely solely on automated systems.
Meta has not publicly disclosed the full extent of the reported breaches but is said to be investigating the claims. The company has previously emphasized its commitment to protecting user accounts through multiple layers of security, including two-factor authentication and identity verification measures.
Security experts are urging users to enable additional account protections, monitor login activity, and use strong authentication methods as cybercriminals continue to develop new techniques to exploit digital platforms.
The reported incident serves as another reminder that while artificial intelligence can improve efficiency and customer support, vulnerabilities in automated systems can also create new opportunities for cyberattacks if safeguards are not properly implemented.
