# Huawei Launches Mate XT 2 Tri-Fold Smartphone, Taking Aim at Apple and Xiaomi

**NEW YORK** : [Huawei ](https://alitoday.com/tag/huawei/)Technologies Co. launched its second-generation tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design, at an event in Guangzhou on Monday, directly challenging Apple and Xiaomi ahead of their own major product unveilings this week.

The device is powered by Huawei's new Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, which the company says is the industry's first high-performance chip to use its 'logic-folding' technology.

[Huawei ](https://www.huawei.com/en/)Executive Director Richard Yu announced at the event that the company has shipped over one million units of its tri-fold smartphones globally .

The launch comes as competition in China's premium smartphone market intensifies.

[Huawei ](http://Huawei)currently leads the country's overall smartphone market with a 22.6% share in the second quarter, ahead of Apple's 18.1%, according to consultancy IDC. The company is even more dominant in the foldable segment, accounting for 68% of shipments in China during the same period.

Xiaomi, which holds 12.4% of the market, is also launching a rival foldable phone later on Monday.

Huawei's new tri-fold device adopts an inward-folding architecture, a departure from its predecessor's outward-folding Z-shaped design. When fully unfolded, the Mate XT 2 features a 10.2-inch 3K OLED display with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate .

In its folded state, users interact with a separate 6.5-inch cover display. The device measures just 3.5mm in thickness when fully unfolded and weighs 299g .

The Kirin 9050 Pro chip is the first high-performance processor to adopt Huawei's 'LogicFolding' architecture, which layers logic units within a single chip . This design shortens signal transmission paths and reduces latency, delivering up to 42% better overall performance than its predecessor, according to company tests .

The chip's unveiling at a flagship event marks Huawei's first detailed Kirin chip presentation since the Mate 40 global launch six years ago .

Huawei's Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design is priced starting at CNY 19,999 (roughly $2,800) for the 16GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. The 512GB and 1TB versions are priced at CNY 21,999 and CNY 23,999, respectively, while a 1TB model with a privacy display costs CNY 24,999.

A top-tier Collector Edition with 16GB RAM and 2TB storage is available for CNY 29,999. Yu noted that the price remains unchanged from the previous generation despite rising memory costs, calling it a 'very sincere price' .

The handset is available in Dark Black, Pure White, and Jin Purple colour options . It features a quad rear camera array housed in an octagonal module, led by a 50-megapixel primary sensor with variable aperture and OIS .

Other cameras include a 40-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom, and a multi-spectral colour sensor. Two 8-megapixel front-facing cameras are positioned on both the cover and internal screens for selfies and video calls .

The device packs a 5,600mAh battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging support . It is also the first tri-fold phone to feature IP58/59 dust and water resistance.

The screen incorporates a privacy feature using independent dual-pixel design to restrict side viewing angles, which users can activate via the external screen or a smart control key .

Huawei's launch comes just two days before Apple's September 9 event, where the company is widely expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone, likely named the iPhone Ultra .

Apple's entry into the foldable category, expected to be priced above $2,000, is seen as a major threat to existing players but also an opportunity to expand the premium foldable market .

'Apple has the world's biggest premium device installed base. Its foldable will sell well and rapidly grab market share' : Counterpoint analyst Ivan Lam stated.

Analysts project Apple could capture a quarter of the global foldable market this year and claim the top spot with a 41% market share next year, according to Smart Analytics Global.

Citi expects Apple to sell approximately 7.3 million units of its foldable iPhone by the first quarter of 2027 . The Mate XT 2 goes on sale in China on September 12 at 10:08 AM local time .
