Indonesia earthquake Hampers rescue at collapsed East Java school

Sidoarjo, Indonesia — Rescue operations at the collapsed Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in East Java have become more difficult after a strong earthquake struck the region, compacting rubble and limiting access for search teams.

At least three people have been confirmed dead, while more than 90 remain missing following Tuesday’s collapse, which occurred during afternoon prayers.

Authorities said the building was undergoing unauthorized construction, and its foundation could not support the additional structure.

Rescuers reported that the 6.5-magnitude quake “packed the debris tighter,” reducing air pockets and making it harder to locate survivors. Teams are relying on cranes, excavators, and manual tools but avoiding heavy machinery to prevent further collapse.

“We are racing against time. Signs of life are still being detected under the rubble,” officials said, urging caution as efforts continue.

The collapse has raised fresh concerns about building safety standards in Indonesia, where unregulated construction remains a widespread issue.
