# IPS Bushra Bano Transferred after “UPSC Jihad” Row

**NEW DELHI :** A complaint has been filed with the West Bengal Home Secretary against IPS officer Bushra Bano over the use of Urdu and Islamic greetings in a recent video in which she shared her journey from Saudi Arabia to the Indian civil services.

According to The Siasat Daily, the complaint was filed by the Hindu Legal Fund.

The organisation objected to Bano beginning the video with “Assalamualaikum,” using “Inshallah” during her message and signing off with “Jazakallah.”

The organisation argued that a serving officer representing the Indian state should maintain neutrality in public communication. It also questioned why she did not use expressions such as “Vande Mataram” or “Jai Hind” and called for an inquiry.

On Social Media platform X, some accounts share post on Bushra Bano.

"IPS Bushra Bano left a comfortable life in Saudi Arabia, fought through two C-sections and four surgeries."

"And Cleared UPSC twice while raising two children, and became an officer of the Indian Police Service. In a video about her journey and how AMU’s RCA helped her, she used the same words her community has used for centuries."

"Suddenly that’s “problematic.” Hindu officers say Namaste. Some say Jai Shri Ram."

"Sikh officers say Sat Sri Akal. Nobody loses sleep."

"But a Muslim woman IPS officer says Assalamualaikum, Inshallah and Jazakallah and the Hindutva outrage machine starts screaming."

"She was not issuing an official FIR & not addressing a press conference as the face of the state. She was talking about her life."

### From Saudi Arabia to the IPS

Bushra Bano, originally from Kannauj district in Uttar Pradesh, completed her PhD in Management Studies from Aligarh Muslim University. She also cleared the National Eligibility Test and Junior Research Fellowship.

After marriage and starting a family, Bano worked as an assistant professor in Saudi Arabia. She later returned to India with the aim of clearing the Union Public Service Commission examination.

In her account of her UPSC journey, she credited AMU’s Residential Coaching Academy with helping her preparation through study material, library access and test series.

### Cleared UPSC Twice

Bushra Bano first cleared the UPSC examination in 2018, securing the 277th rank and being allotted the Indian Railway Traffic Service. However, she could not take up the post as she was pregnant with her second child.

She appeared for the examination again the following year and secured the 234th rank, which led to her selection for the Indian Police Service.

Bano was allotted the West Bengal cadre and became part of the 2021-batch IPS officers.

She began her career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Hooghly Rural.

In June 2026, she was promoted to Additional Superintendent of Police and was posted in Kharagpur.

The complaint has sparked discussion over the use of religious greetings by serving civil servants and the boundaries of personal expression in official or public communication.

The complaint itself does not establish any misconduct, and the West Bengal government’s position on the matter remains important in determining whether any action will follow.
