# Jio IPO: From Dhirubhai Ambani’s 1977 Listing to Akash Ambani’s Mega Issue — Why Gen Z Is Watching

**MUMBAI :** Nearly five decades after [Dhirubhai Ambani](https://www.reliancegroupindia.com/about-shri-dhirubhai-ambani) took Reliance Industries to the public markets, the Ambani family is preparing for another major milestone: the proposed initial public offering ([IPO](https://www.jio.com/about/investor-relations/ipo/)) of Jio Platforms, the digital and telecommunications business led by Akash Ambani.

According to *Mint*, Jio Platforms is planning to raise approximately **$3.2 billion**, with a proposed valuation of around **$108 billion**.

If completed at the reported scale, the offering could surpass Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870-crore IPO in 2024 to become India’s largest-ever public issue.

### Jio’s Digital Ambitions

Reliance’s relationship with retail investors dates back to November 1977, when Dhirubhai Ambani raised ₹2.8 crore through the company’s first public offering.

The issue attracted approximately 58,000 investors and was subscribed seven times, according to the article. Reliance expanded from textiles and chemicals into energy, consumer businesses and telecommunications.

Jio subsequently reshaped India’s telecom market with affordable 4G data services, accelerating the country’s digital adoption.

Now, the proposed [Jio ](https://alitoday.com/tag/jio/)Platforms IPO represents a significant milestone for Akash Ambani, the company’s managing director, as investors assess the value of its digital and telecom operations.

### Why Gen Z Investors

India’s growing retail-investor base has changed the way major public offerings are evaluated.

Younger investors are increasingly examining company valuations, profitability, business models and long-term growth prospects rather than relying solely on brand recognition or the possibility of immediate listing gains.

The article quoted young investor Sweta Chowdhury as saying:

“The Jio IPO offers an opportunity to examine the scale of India's digital economy and the business model behind one of its major players. Independent analysis matters.”

Another young investor emphasised the importance of informed decisions:

“The Jio IPO conversation reflects growing interest in India's digital businesses. Reliable information and balanced analysis should remain at the centre of the discussion. #JioIPO.”

Investor Sachya highlighted the potential impact of listing gains, saying:

“Fun math: if Jio Platforms lists ~19% above the upper band, one lot moves from ₹13,428 to ~ ₹16,000. That ₹2,500+ difference is exactly why this IPO is trending on every finance page.”

### Valuation & Listing

According to the report, Jio Platforms’ proposed price band is ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share, placing its valuation at approximately $108 billion at the upper end.

The article also reported a grey market premium of ₹221 as of October 17, implying a potential listing price of around ₹1,340.

However, grey market premiums are unofficial indicators, not guarantees of listing-day returns. Actual performance will depend on market conditions, investor demand and the company’s financial outlook.

The proposed issue reportedly comprises up to 27 crore fresh equity shares, with no offer-for-sale component. The report also said the revised issue size is nearly 14% lower than the approximately ₹35,000 crore indicated in the draft papers.

With the proposed IPO attracting attention from domestic and international investors, the central question is whether Jio’s growth prospects justify its valuation.

For Gen Z and first-time investors, the offering is more than a high-profile corporate listing.

It is an opportunity to examine how India’s digital economy is valued and why independent research matters before investing.
