# Pralhad Joshi Warns Against ‘Hooliganism’ as Jamia Students’ Union Protest Enters Day 17

**NEW DELHI :** Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has condemned the reported violence during the ongoing student agitation at [Jamia Millia Islamia](https://jmi.ac.in/), warning that the government would not tolerate what he described as “hooliganism” or “rowdy behaviour”.

The protest, led by students demanding the restoration of the university’s students’ union, entered its 17th day on Wednesday.

“What happened at Jamia Millia Islamia is very unfortunate, and I strongly condemn it,” Joshi said, according to *The Pioneer*.

His remarks came after the university released photographs showing shattered windows and alleged that protesters had forced their way into parts of the campus, damaging surveillance cameras and other property.

The allegations have not been independently verified in the report.

## Police Investigation

Joshi said the government would not tolerate “hooliganism or rowdy behaviour by people who come wearing masks”.

He added that a police complaint had been filed and urged Delhi Police to investigate the matter seriously.

The minister also said a seven-member committee comprising senior deans and professors had been formed to examine the students’ demands.

According to him, the students had been assured that their concerns would be addressed.

While acknowledging allegations that some innocent students had also been targeted during the agitation, [Joshi ](https://alitoday.com/tag/pralhad-joshi/)maintained that action had been taken against individuals allegedly involved in activities against the university.

## Students Demand's

The central demand of the protest is the restoration of the [Jamia Millia Islamia ](https://alitoday.com/tag/jamia-millia-islamia/)students’ union, which has remained defunct since 2006, following a serious incident of violence that led to the suspension of the election process.

The university administration has stated that elections will be held within 15 days of the students’ union constitution being approved. However, protesters have rejected this assurance as inadequate, arguing that the administration has not provided a firm deadline for ratifying the constitution.

Students are demanding both a specific election date and a clear timeline for approving the constitution.

A recent university order reportedly revoked suspensions and show-cause notices issued to students during the agitation and provided for an inquiry into the conduct of security personnel.

Despite these steps, the protest remains unresolved.

## Standoff Continues at Jamia

The latest developments highlight the growing tension between students and the university administration over representation, disciplinary action and the right to protest.

While the education minister has condemned the reported damage to university property and called for a police investigation, students continue to press for a definite timeline for restoring their elected representative body.

The agitation entering its third week, the immediate challenge for the university is to address the students’ demands while ensuring campus safety and accountability for any verified misconduct.
