# Trump Suggests Renaming New Mexico to ‘New America’ in Social Media Post, No Executive Order Signed

**Washington D.C** : President [Donald Trump](https://alitoday.com/tag/donald-trump/) suggested changing the name of the state of New Mexico to 'New America' in a post on his Truth Social platform on September 6, but he has not signed an executive order to enact such a change.

The President posted an image of a map of the state with the word '[Mexico](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico)' crossed out and replaced with 'America,' alongside an AI-generated video showing a roadside welcome sign being altered .

In his post, Trump wrote: 'Many people have suggested changing the name of New Mexico to New America. It sounds more honorable and beautiful for the residents of that state, which has so much potential. Wow, I like it' .

The White House later reposted the image on X, without providing an explanation or indicating whether this reflected an actual policy proposal .

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham responded to the suggestion, stating that the state's name is not a matter for debate. 'There is nothing to argue about when it comes to New Mexico's name — it was our name before the United States was founded,' Grisham told Fox News .

She accused the President of attempting to distract Americans from rising gasoline and food prices, reduced healthcare access, and housing affordability challenges .

Political leaders and residents have widely opposed the proposal.

Critics noted that the name '[New Mexico](https://alitoday.com/tag/new-mexico/)' dates back to the 16th century, when Spanish explorers used 'Nuevo México' to refer to the region, making it older than the United States itself .

Legal experts and reports confirm that the President does not have the authority to unilaterally change a state's name. While the President can rename geographical features like lakes and gulfs for federal use through executive orders, altering a state name requires action by the state's legislature and residents, typically through a state legislative process and public referendum .

The suggestion follows Trump's recent executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' in January 2025 and Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' on August 27, 2026 .

Those orders apply only to federal maps and agencies and can be reversed by a future administration . The White House has not announced any formal plan to change New Mexico's name .
