Türkiye and Saudi Arabia Sign Hejaz Railway Corridor Connectivity Agreements

Riyadh: Türkiye and Saudi Arabia have signed two major memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening regional transportation and logistics networks, including plans to revive the historic Hejaz Railway and develop a new fiber-optic corridor connecting key parts of the Middle East.

The agreements were signed in Riyadh on June 9 and focus on railway cooperation and logistics development. The project seeks to reconnect Türkiye with Saudi Arabia through Syria and Jordan, reviving a route that once played a significant role in regional trade and travel.

Under the agreement, both countries will conduct a joint feasibility study before the end of the year to assess the railway’s development potential.

Long-term plans also envision extending the network toward Oman and the Indian Ocean, creating a broader transportation corridor linking multiple countries.

Rewiring Historic Hejaz Railway

The Hejaz Railway was originally built during the Ottoman era and connected major cities across the region. The new initiative aims to modernize and restore sections of the route, creating a strategic land connection between Türkiye, Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

Experts view the project as more than a railway venture.

It is expected to support trade, tourism, logistics, and economic cooperation while strengthening regional integration.

Alongside the railway plans, the two countries also agreed to cooperate on logistics and digital infrastructure projects. A new terrestrial fiber-optic route is planned along the railway corridor, providing an alternative communication network linking Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

The initiative comes as governments and technology companies seek more secure data routes amid growing concerns over disruptions to submarine internet cables in key maritime regions.

Strategic Trade Corridor

Analysts say the railway revival complements several major infrastructure projects currently under development, including Türkiye’s Middle Corridor initiative and the Development Road project connecting Iraq’s Grand Faw Port with Türkiye.

The combined network could create new trade routes for goods, energy, and digital communications moving between Asia, the Gulf region, and Europe.

The project is also expected to support economic growth in countries along the route by improving transportation links and encouraging investment in logistics infrastructure.

Türkiye-Saudi Relations

The agreements reflect the growing partnership between Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, with both countries increasingly cooperating on trade, investment, transportation, and regional development initiatives.

Observers note that the revival of the Hejaz Railway carries both historical and strategic significance, transforming a century-old transportation route into a modern corridor designed to move freight, energy resources, and digital data across the region.

The railway and digital connectivity plans could become one of the Middle East’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, potentially reshaping trade and communication links between Asia, the Gulf, and Europe.
