New York — Democratic Socialist Assembly member Zohran Mamdani has been projected as the winner of the 2025 New York City mayoral election, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
According to Decision Desk HQ, the race was called at 9:03 p.m. New York time, with Mamdani leading in key boroughs including Brooklyn and Queens.
In his first X post after his victory, Mamdani posted a video showing a New York subway train opening at City Hall, with the text “Zohran For New York City” emerging on the wall. In the background, the announcement, “The next and last stop is City Hall,” can be heard. City Hall is the place where the mayor’s office is located.
The 34-year-old state assemblyman, representing Queens and affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, ran on a platform of progressive reform: affordable housing, police reform, climate action and expanding access to public services.
He secured his party’s nomination in June, setting him up as the frontrunner in the heavily Democratic city. Mamdani defeated Cuomo in both the primary and general election contests.
His campaign connected deeply with younger and working-class voters who were drawn to his grassroots style and policy agenda.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian-origin parents and raised in New York, Mamdani is an immigrant turned public servant, symbolising a generational shift in the city’s leadership.
His rise was not without controversy. He faced attacks over his progressive views, including criticism for his stance on Israel and being labeled an “extremist” by opponents. Undeterred, Mamdani leaned into his advocacy and faith, becoming a prominent voice for inclusive politics.
Mamdani’s win is widely viewed as a momentous shift in New York politics. It underscores the growing influence of progressive movements in major American cities and signals a changing electorate focused on economic justice, social equity and transformative leadership.
