On April 21, 2025, Bluesky rolled out its blue check verification system to enhance user trust and authenticity on the platform.
Unlike X’s paid verification model, Bluesky’s blue checks are free, focusing on authenticity rather than a pay-to-play approach.
Bluesky proactively verifies “authentic and notable” accounts, such as government officials, journalists, and celebrities, to combat impersonation.
Select organizations, like Alitoday, are designated as “Trusted Verifiers” to issue blue checks to their members, streamlining verification.
Trusted Verifiers receive a scalloped blue check, while verified users get a rounded one, distinguishing their roles.
Users can tap a blue check to see which entity (Bluesky or a Trusted Verifier) granted the verification, ensuring transparency.
Bluesky isn’t accepting verification requests yet but plans to launch a public form once the system stabilizes.
The blue check system complements Bluesky’s existing domain-based verification, where 270,000 accounts have linked to a website.
Bluesky’s approach contrasts with X’s controversial paid verification, aiming to restore the blue check’s original meaning of trust.
While some praise the return to authentic verification, others worry it may mimic centralized platforms, sparking debate among users.
