Meta, the company behind Facebook, let go of around 24 workers from its Los Angeles office because they didn’t use their meal vouchers correctly.
These vouchers are meant for buying meals at work through services like Grubhub or Uber Eats. However, some employees used the $25 dinner voucher to buy things like toothpaste and wine glasses, or they had dinner delivered to their homes instead of eating at the office.
One of the fired employees was earning $400,000 a year and found it surprising to be fired over such a small amount. Those who didn’t misuse the vouchers as often were warned but kept their jobs.

Meta started a new round of layoffs on Wednesday that affected teams across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs. It’s unclear how many people were affected.
Meta reported 22% revenue growth, or revenue of $39.07 billion, in its second quarter in late July. In an earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the company was “driving good growth” and that Meta AI was “on track to be the most used AI assistant in the world by the end of the year.”
