In a recent surge of alarming Islamophobic incidents within British politics, accusations have been leveled against Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Criticized, igniting a firestorm of controversy.
The accusations stem from a series of events, including a blatant attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan by former Conservative Party Deputy Chairman Lee Anderson, who claimed Khan was under the influence of “Islamists.” Labour leader Keir Starmer penned an article for The Observer, condemning Sunak for allegedly harboring “extremists” within his party and lambasting other senior Conservatives for their “toxic” rhetoric.
The turmoil escalated with the suspension of Anderson and the publication of an article by former Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who claimed that “Islamists, extremists, and antisemites” were in control in the UK.

These incidents unfolded against the backdrop of a controversial decision by House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle to allow a Labour Party amendment to a Scottish National Party motion regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, sparking further divisions.
Former Prime Minister Liz Truss faced criticism for her silence at a US event where Tommy Robinson, a notorious Islamophobic and xenophobic figure, was praised. Starmer condemned Anderson’s suspension as a mere token gesture and questioned the judgment of the Prime Minister in appointing him as deputy chairman. He called on Sunak to take action against the “extremists” within his party, warning of the escalating toxicity in political rhetoric.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the silence from Sunak and his Cabinet, describing Anderson’s comments as “Islamophobic, anti-Muslim, and racist.”
He accused them of condoning racism and fostering a hierarchy of racism within the country. Khan expressed dismay at the lack of condemnation from Sunak and his Cabinet, suggesting complicity in perpetuating racism against Muslims.

The surge in Islamophobic incidents has been alarming, with reports indicating a more than threefold increase since October, according to Tell MAMA, an organization monitoring anti-Muslim sentiment in the UK.
This rise has been attributed to far-right rhetoric, particularly following Braverman’s controversial statements regarding pro-Palestinian protesters. Braverman’s criticism of the protesters and the Metropolitan Police’s handling of the situation sparked further controversy, with accusations of fueling far-right rhetoric.
As tensions continue to mount, calls for action against Islamophobia within British politics grow louder, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and measures to combat discrimination and hate speech.
