GAZA : India has reportedly blocked the theatrical release of The Voice of Hind Rajab, a docudrama based on the killing of a young Palestinian girl in Gaza, according to the film’s distributor.
The film, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, tells the story of Hind Rajab, a child who was killed during the conflict in Gaza as her family attempted to flee.
The project gained international attention and was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best International Feature category.
Manoj Nandwana of Jai Viratra Entertainment, the film’s distributor in India, said a member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) indicated that allowing the film’s release could affect India’s diplomatic ties with Israel.
“After screening it for the board it was clear to me that they would not clear it for release in India,” Nandwana said, adding that he had not received an official written rejection.
He also questioned the decision, noting that the film has been screened internationally, including in Israel. “The film has been released all over the world including in Israel. Why is it bad or sensitive for Indians?” he said. “It’s strange.”
Despite the reported restriction, the film was previously screened at an international film festival in Kolkata in November last year.

The development has sparked criticism from some political leaders. Shashi Tharoor described the move as “disgraceful,” arguing that artistic expression should not be limited due to diplomatic considerations.
“In a democracy, screening a film is a reflection of our society’s freedom of expression and has nothing to do with government to government relations,” he said.
India has strengthened its ties with Israel in recent years across sectors such as defence, technology and agriculture, while also maintaining its traditional support for Palestinian statehood.
The Voice of Hind Rajab was also recognized at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize and drew strong emotional reactions from audiences.
