A recent video excerpt from the popular comedy show India’s Got Latent featuring comedian Samay Raina has sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with accusations of racism and insensitivity taking center stage.
The clip shows one of the judges making light of a contestant’s stance on politics after she revealed that she had neither voted nor expressed interest in political affairs. The judge’s comment, seemingly intended as humor, was, “Kerala, Saar… 100 percent literacy Saar…”
The remark quickly drew ire, with many social media users accusing the judge of ridiculing the contestant’s personal choice. Further uproar emerged over the alleged misrepresentation of the contestant’s accent, with critics noting that the “Saar” inflection used was not characteristic of Kerala’s Malayali accent, but rather a generic South Indian stereotype often weaponized to deride regional dialects.
This incident has ignited broader conversations surrounding the inappropriate use of accents as a comedic device. Several netizens highlighted the problematic nature of making fun of regional accents within India, stressing that every state possesses its own linguistic diversity, and reducing them to a caricature undermines the cultural richness of each.
A number of commentators also pointed out the irony of mocking Indian accents within the country when similar behavior is often condemned when it occurs abroad, particularly in contexts where Indians are subject to racial discrimination in Western countries.
Further fuelling the controversy is the criticism that the joke was part of a larger pattern of mocking non-BJP-ruled states, particularly Kerala and West Bengal, with allegations that the satire perpetuated divisive and racially charged stereotypes, a narrative sometimes attributed to the BJP’s IT Cell.
This pattern of controversial content on India’s Got Latent has raised concerns over the show’s reliance on lowbrow humor to capture ratings, rather than fostering a responsible and inclusive form of entertainment.

This is not the first time the show has faced backlash for its content. An earlier incident, where an FIR was lodged against a contestant over her remarks about Arunachali cuisine, exemplifies the show’s history of generating public outrage through contentious jokes.
The latest controversy surrounding the India’s Got Latent sketch underscores a growing sensitivity to cultural representation, regional identities, and the impact of humor in perpetuating stereotypes. With India’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape, many argue that comedy should be mindful of its power to either bridge divides or reinforce them.
