DALTON, GEORGIA : US President Donald Trump drew criticism after mocking the popularity of the name Mohammad among Muslims during a campaign rally in Dalton, Georgia, on Friday. His remarks, made while discussing Iran, reportedly received a muted response from the audience. “You know, if you’re in doubt about somebody’s name from the Middle East, just say ‘Mohammad’,” “You have about a 65 per cent chance. ‘Hello, Mohammad.’ I’ve done it for years now. I’ve never been wrong.” Trump told the crowd. Donald Trump made the comments while campaigning for Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. He subsequently turned his remarks towards Iran, claiming that nobody wanted to become president of the country. “Iran is the only country where nobody wants to be president,” he said, before pretending to ask several people named Mohammad whether they wanted the position. Trump also reiterated his pledge that Iran would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. The comments came amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Critics argue that such language risks reinforcing stereotypes and contributing to hostility towards minority communities. During the rally, protesters also interrupted Donald Trump’s speech to oppose his administration’s immigration policies. Donald Trump suggested that Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff had paid the demonstrators to disrupt the event, referring to him as a “left-wing loser”. The episode adds to the broader political debate over immigration, religious identity and the treatment of Muslim communities in the United States as the midterm election campaign intensifies.
