President Donald Trump proposes renaming Veterans Day and adding a new holiday to celebrate America’s world war victories, suggesting major changes to the US holiday calendar.

Trump, in a late Thursday post on Truth Social, suggested renaming the November 11 Veterans Day holiday to ‘Victory Day for World War I’ to ‘start celebrating our victories again’ and proposed recognizing May 8, known as V-E Day in 1945, as ‘Victory Day for World War II’ to mark the end of the war in Europe.

“We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so!” Trump Posted.

Trump proposed renaming Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day from November 11, 1918, to “Victory Day for World War I” and suggested May 8 as “Victory Day for World War II” to mark V-E Day in 1945.

He did not specify if May 8 would become a federal holiday, which requires congressional approval, and states aren’t obligated to observe federal holidays, per the Congressional Research Service.

Renamed in 1954 to honor all U.S. veterans after World War II and the Korean War, Veterans Day’s proposed change overlooks veterans of other conflicts. Trump’s May 8 focus is debated, as World War II ended on September 2, 1945, with Japan’s surrender on V-J Day.

“Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II,” Trump added in his post.
